In 1540, from Saint-Malo, Malo boards La Vigilante disguised as a young sailor. The Indian Ocean is a vast field of trade, rival empires and hidden knowledge; Portuguese cartographers guard maps that command entire routes. Along the coasts of Madagascar, the crew crosses paths with slavers, spice merchants, Bantu communities and shifting alliances. In this first volume of a maritime trilogy, memory, betrayal and freedom form the true cargo.
